The clothes in this boutique are bright and beautiful, but an unseen quality makes them unlike like much of what you'll find in Houston. "It's my passion for fashion with a conscience," clothing designer Adeline Sung said. This is "Green by Adeline," an eco-friendly clothing line. To look at this clothing, touch it and feel how soft it is, it's tough to believe it's made of similar materials to a floor. "This is bamboo," Sung said. Sung uses a combination of bamboo, organic cotton and other eco-friendly materials to create her clothing. And why not complete that outfit with earth-friendly jewelry? For that, meet jewelry designer Ingrid van der Meer. "I make recycled earrings out of plastic shopping bags," van der Meer said. That's right -- plastic bags fired into earrings of any color. (Well, any color you can find in a shopping bag!) A clever artist, van der Meer uses vinyl records, spoons, forks, even a circuit board, to make these earrings and this purse. "An awful lot of artists now work in repurposed, recycled or refound materials," executive director of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft Julie Farr said. Farr features van der Meer's jewelry at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, along with the work of others. For instance, this artist's drop cloth that has been turned into a jacket! "What would normally happen to a drop cloth once it had lost its usefulness? A landfill," Farr explained. "So now this is someone's jacket. Yep, it's a work of art." Truly from trash to treasure.
